So Scary, but a massive well done to Kate Hook who has just posted this on the visitors posts on Bumps and Bashes Facebook page. So glad her little boy is Ok, I was scared whilst reading your post, but thank you for sharing.
Although I do have a laugh on my courses, it is such a serious skill to know and I never underestimate how important emergency first aid is.
.
I’d just like to say thanks to Kate for my first aid training which I took several months ago (whilst pregnant) but had to call into use this morning…. My little boy (now nearly 9mths) got a bit cocky with his newly acquired teeth vs his usual banana biscuit, and bit off – quite literally – more than he could chew. I watched his face as he struggled to cough it up, and once I realised it had got stuck and he fell SILENT it felt as though someone had injected my whole body with antifreeze as my blood ran cold! Anyway, I thought back to my First Aid class at Bumps and Bashes, and immediately put him facing down the length of my knee to let gravity help me, and started to administer forceful slaps to his back between his shoulder blades. It felt like an eternity (but was in reality just a matter of seconds) before the food dislodged and came flying out! Phew!! All this happened so quickly and I dread to think what might’ve happened if I hadn’t been watching him, or hadn’t been able to act as quickly, or didn’t know what to do. So glad I was able to use what I’d learnt all those months ago on this course, and so glad this is a very happy outcome. Praying I don’t need to use any of my first aid skills for a long time now though!
